Demonic Circus Protagonist: Vega

Demonic Circus is my final project for my Concept Art Master's Degree. It's a roguelike game about battling in a circus ruled by a demon in order to get the soul you sold to him back.

The protagonist is a 40 year old woman that sold her soul (and her eye) to save her husband, and now after having divorved him, she wants to start rebuilding her life by getting her soul back.

She will have a new home, new friends, and new powers, as well as different demonic foes to beat each show in order to try to defeat the eye collecting demon.

Her design uses star symbolism, wich made me pick the star shaped cape. The biggest challenge with this design was to make the cape work and convey her cold and melanchoic personality without making her look ‘Evil’.

First silouette work and portrait exploration. The cape design worked well in the end.

Cape explorations. The prince-like star shaped cape was my favourite one but she looked too much like an ‘evil’ character, so I kept exploring.

Some style and value explorations, something still didn’t convince me about the design, she still looked too ‘evil’.

More cape variations trying to find another shaped that worked better for a protagonist. Still, the star-shaped one was still my favourite.

After finding some more gentle shapes for the cape, I made some color variations and liked the monochrome colors with the dark skin.

Some light studies I made to check how her design worked with different light scenarios. The white bits in her cape gain color as she gains powers through a run.
